The year is 1995, and email is new. Selin, the daughter of Turkish immigrants, arrives for her freshman year at Harvard. She signs up for classes in subjects she has never heard of, befriends her charismatic and worldly Serbian classmate, Svetlana, and, almost by accident, begins corresponding with Ivan, an older mathematics student from Hungary. Selin may have barely spoken to Ivan, but with each email they exchange, the act of writing seems to take on new and increasingly mysterious meanings. 

At the end of the school year, Ivan goes to Budapest for the summer, and Selin heads to the Hungarian countryside, to teach English in a program run by one of Ivan's friends. On the way, she spends two weeks visiting Paris with Svetlana. Selin's summer in Europe does not resonate with anything she has previuously heard about the typical experiences of American college students, or indeed of any other kinds of people. For Selin, this is a journey further inside herself: a coming to grips with the ineffable and exhilarating confusion of first love, and with the growing consciousness that she is doomed to become a writer."

"The Idiot" de Elif Batuman foi uma levada de ar fresco pelo género contemporâneo. Um dos meus géneros favoritos e algo que normalmente me diverte muito: conversas fluídas, interessantes e surpresamente boas.

I had read in a scientific study that the majority of girls and young women didn't perceive themselves accurately when they looked in the mirror.

Selin é uma boa personagem literária para acompanharmos: filha de imigrantes turcos, estuda em Harvard, conhece Paris (com a sua melhor amiga, Svetlana) e a Hungria, apaixona-se por Ivan e vive com um coração amargurado. Partilha algumas preocupações das quais o leitor pode-se identificar e, gosta de ler, sobretudo, autores russos. 

How were you supposed to talk about peolple?

É o primeiro livro que li da autora e, já percebi que existe o segundo volume desta história nomeadamente: "Either/or" e, que foi publicada neste ano. Uma coincidência feliz que me vai permitir continuar a acompanhar Selin.

Every now and then, a book had something like that in it, and it was some comfort. But if it wasn't quite the same thing as having an opinion.

É uma história que nos prende facilmente, com alguns diálogos filosóficos que nos abre o pensamento.
