Por indicação do Podcast Livra-te da qual já falei por aqui inúmeras vezes, propus-me a fazer parte das sugestões de leituras deste mês. Nomeadamente: City of Girls da Elizabeth Gilbert e All The Light We Cannot See de Anthony Doerr.  Hoje, vou partilhar a opinião referente à primeira indicação. 

I never loved the people I was supposed to love, Angela.

Já por algum tempo que tinha este livro debaixo de olho, mas o momento de leitura parecia sempre ser adiado por outras novidades que ganhavam prioridade ou outros livros que queria mesmo ler. Todavia, finalmente criou-se a oportunidade e, fiquei super feliz com o prazer de o ler. 

There was a new moon, and you could almost see some stars. That was the night when we told each other everything about ourselves.

City of Girls de Elizabeth Gilbert, leva-nos até aos anos 40 em Nova Iorque sob o despoletar da Segunda Guerra Mundial como pano de fundo e o mundo do teatro e dos artistas como o centro de ação. Pormenor esse que absolutamente adorei.

What's the new show on deck? «It's called City of Girls», he said. «I told you about it last month».

A nossa protagonista Vivian Morris, recebe uma carta de uma mulher chamada Angela na qual lhe conta do falecimento do seu pai e, do qual lhe pede se agora poderia por fim lhe contar qual a natureza da relação e afeção que ambos tinham. 

He didn´t want him to know you very well, Angela, because he didn't want his life to hurt your life.

É através dessa carta que descobrimos todo o passado de Vivian, desde a adolescência quando foi expulsa de um prestigiado colégio Vassar em Clinton até à relação que tem com os pais, o irmão e, a sua pessoa preferida, a avó Morris bem como a sua chegada à Nova Iorque e todo o mundo que lá encontra.

I see him try to figure out what to do about it. Then I see him decide to do nothing. That was the worst part.

É nesta nova cidade que lhe convida a se autodescobrir que comete o maior erro da sua vida trazendo-lhe mágoa por alguns anos, mas também é onde reencontra o seu amor pela costura e onde se une à veia artística que graças à sua tia Peg gera. 

All's fair in love and war.

É um livro absolutamente imperdível. Neste momento, também me encontro ligada a esta esfera cultural do teatro e, talvez por isso, tenha gostado ainda mais desta história. De qualquer das formas, aprendemos a nos perdoar pelos erros (nossos e dos outros) que ao longo da nossa vida vamos (quase que) perpetuando e igualmente compreendemos que o mundo não é governado segundo as nossas regras ou noções do correto e do errado, que tem antes vida própria.

When something ends, let it end.

Só sabemos a identidade de Angela mais para o final do livro bem como a analogia ao seu pai. E, se o meu tempo livre já estava rendido a esta leitura então essa revelação soube a magia quando por fim é detetado e atado as pontas soltas. Acompanhamos esta história por algumas das mais belas décadas numa cidade que se transforma da guerra. Recomendo muito lerem e, só posso desejar uma excelente leitura.
